Lucas Moura is playing well despite his lack of goals for Tottenham Hotspur.
On the chalkboard
The Brazilian led the line for Spurs against Manchester City on Sunday and again he failed to score; Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-Min netted in the 2-0 victory.
His last goal for the club came in December when he netted in the 2-1 win over Wolves.
His blank against City means that Lucas has now gone eight Premier League games without scoring.
However, versus Pep Guardiola’s side, he was an important member of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Playing up front, he laid on the clever assist for Steven Bergwijn’s goal, clipping a lofted pass into the box that the Netherlands international controlled on his chest and finished with an expert volley.
Per WhoScored, the 27-year-old had 31 touches of the ball, completed two dribbles, won one aerial duel and also won one tackle and made one clearance.
He collected a 7.44 rating for his efforts, the third time in four games that he has been given a rating over a seven. It’s notable that he scored in precisely zero of these games.
Sacrificial
Lucas is sacrificing himself for the team and it is clearly working.
Against City, the £36m-rated forward did not exactly plough a lone furrow but routinely dropped deeper to help provide support to the midfield, as well as looking to support the defence.
Forever a Spurs legend: Honour Pochettino by getting 100% on this all-Poch quiz…
His heatmap is illustrative of this, with the majority of his touches coming outside of the City penalty box and a large portion even coming on the right flank.
That suggests that he was swapping roles with the likes of Son and Bergwijn to maximise his side’s threat.
While Jose Mourinho may not have a natural No.9, he does have a player who is willing to sacrifice himself for the cause.
That may be just as good.
Meanwhile, Spurs fans love one Jose Mourinho moment!
