For those of us who were previously unaware of Hoffenheim’s fast emerging Brazilian talent – the 23-year-old Roberto Firmino – football fans need look no further back than to last weekend’s all South American friendly between Brazil and Chile to see what the up and coming star is truly capable of.
The Bundesliga sensation may not have had a great deal of time to make an impact after coming off the bench in the second half, but Firmino quickly took proceedings into his own hands – scoring the only goal of the match and sealing a much needed morale boosting win for his nation after Brazil’s public debacle at the World Cup last summer.
The game simply changed when the young man came on and Brazil all of a sudden revealed another impressive asset to support the often isolated Neymar up top – someone who could perhaps even better the world renowned Barcelona man one day in the not too distant future.
In light of such developments this season, the creative attacking midfielder now has himself many suitors across Europe’s most competitive leagues, with the Premier League reportedly holding a distinct interest in the player’s qualities.
But just where in England would Roberto Firmino be best suited, and which deal ultimately seems the most likely?
After being issued a 90% likelihood of leaving Hoffenheim this summer, Arsene Wenger and the Gunners will almost certainly be one of the more high profile teams taking part in the race to sign the up and coming young talent. Arsenal have reportedly been long term admirers of the Brazilian, as their preference for players in a similar mould to Roberto Firmino has become no secret throughout the years.
The highly coveted star has bagged himself six solid league goals this season, for a side that have so far proved somewhat off challenging the likes of Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg for European football across the 2014/15 campaign.
He is nevertheless blessed with an ability to eye a chance from out of nowhere with his pace and composure – and as an improvement in his goal scoring exploits is yet expected of the no.10 in the next few years of his career – the Premier League really could be in for a treat if it manages to successfully house the exciting prospect next season.
That said however, perhaps Roberto Firmino’s greatest asset is his preference for assisting his teammates in front of goal rather than always going for gold himself. The Brazilian seems the love it when he turns provider for the rest of his colleagues, which is what makes the Hoffenheim fan favourite such a joy to behold at the moment.
It’s becoming increasingly rare to find a player with such grace, quick-feet and vision across the pitch without him being a greedy one at that – so if Arsenal actually turn their reported interest in the star into something a bit more concrete this summer – Roberto Firmino could fit it very nicely alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez down at the Emirates in 2015/16.
On the other hand though, if Manchester United continue their apparent intrigue in bringing Firmino to Old Trafford next season, perhaps Arsene Wenger might be on the end of yet another potentially exciting missed transfer target.
The Red Devils are also supposedly in the race to land the Bundesliga talent throughout the course of next summer – and Louis van Gaal may just prove successful enough in this department with the extent of financial power behind Manchester United at the moment – something Arsenal aren’t quite in a position to yet compete with.
Unless the Gunners turn all their resources to landing the Brazilian this summer, fans of the Premier League might just see Roberto Firmino turn out in a United shirt next season with his stock now on a dramatic rise. He could certainly do the business at Old Trafford of course, but as the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria have struggled at their new club of late, maybe a degree of caution must be applied by the player if he really is considering the move.
Wherever the rising talent eventually ends up, expect the world to remember Roberto Firmino for a long time to come – whether it be in the ever captivating European continental scene, or perhaps even closer to home in the Premier League.
